Originally settled by the Romans, Barcelona is located within Catalonia, a state of Spain.

Bordering the Mediterranean Sea, Barcelona is 160km south of the French Pyrenees Mountains. The city was built on a plain about 5 km wide. Its perimeters are limited North and South by rivers and its Western limit is the mountain range of Coli sera. East, as said, is the Mediterranean Sea. You can get to Barcelona by air, sea, rail or road. Its airport is 17 km from the city center and is served with excellent rail and motorway links. Vueling Airlines, Spanair and Air Europa all use the airport as a major hub.

Barcelona is also important for the state rail network. A, 300 km/h train travels to Madrid. France is connected to Barcelona with a fast train service too. This is currently being further upgraded. There is much evidence of the Romans in this city with ruins preserved and displayed all over. The city centre itself testifies to Rome’s popular grid method of laying out a city. See also the Plaça del Rei, near the museum (Museu d'Història de la Ciutat), the Barri Gòtic ("Gothic Quarter") and the basilica La Seu, the later built in 343.

Even if you are not into architecture, you must visit some of the structures of the famous architect Antoni Gaudí. La Sagrada Família church, his ongoing masterpiece, Park Güell, Palau Güell, Casa Milà (La Pedrera), Casa Vicens, Sagrada Família Casa Batlló, and the Crypt in Colonia Güell. Sant Sebastià and Barceloneta beaches, are the most popular beaches in Barcelona. They are also in the top 10 beaches of the world, so well worth a visit. As a result of 1992 Olympic Games the beaches and port have been developed to a high standard. Sand is continually replenished from local quarries to maintain the standard.

The FIFA World Cup was held in this city in 1982. It has also hosted many major International events in sports such as Basketball, League. Hockey, Roller hockey, Judo, Tae Kwon Do and many others. All have contributed to the development of its world class facilities. FC Barcelona's Camp Nou, is the largest stadium in Europe with a capacity of 100,000. VEstadi Cornellà-El Prat, seats 40,000. To name a few.

Cycling, running and Formula 1 racing events take place regularly in the city limits. Check with your tour organizer to see what's on when you are visiting. You may get the opportunity of a lifetime, to see the best of the best battle it out in style. Textiles have always been a very important industry in this city. Naturally fashion follows manufacture and there are some amazing shops with leading edge fashions displayed for world buyers.
